Details

Over the weekend I went to visit some family out of town. The drive took about 6 hours each way. My wife gets car sick when she is not driving, so she did most of it. This gave me lots of time to write and I was able to get a few pages done. I am still having trouble naming all my characters, but that is getting easier. The newest hurtle is getting enough detail. This was a challenge in the first few pages. I do not feel like I got the picture in my head onto the paper, but after 4-5 hours of writing in the car it seems to be getting easier. By the end of a three hour stretch (the kids had fallen asleep) it was going much more smoothly. At least that is how it seemed to me. We will see if it is getting better once someone reads the draft.

Names, Names, and More Names

So this week of writing has gone pretty well. I am having a little bit of trouble with one thing though, names. It seems like everything needs a name. The main character, support characters, locations, ... Everything needs a name. At first it did not bother me, but then I realized I was using names from books, or movies I have seen. I have resorted to using brackets a lot. "He lived in [city name] for 5 years." I will just have to go back and fill those in later.

Prologue - The Journey Begins

I am starting this blog for those of you that would like to follow me as I begin to write a book. I guess that makes this blog the story of my book, or The Book of the Book. About a year ago I lost my teaching job, which I really loved, and I have been working part time ever since. This gives me a lot of spare time, most of which I waste. I have had a story idea in the back of my mind for a while now, but I have never written it down. That is about to change! I would like some company on this journey so feel free to follow along with me as I write my story.
